Explanation of a domain name

A domain name is a component of a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) used to access web sites, for example:

  • URL: http://www.example.net/index.html
  • Top-level domain name: .net
  • Second-level domain name: example.net
  • Host name: www.example.net

A domain name may point to a host, or a place that your website is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We can provide multiple IP addresses to provide server redundancy so that your website is always available. This is used for large, popular web sites that consume significant bandwidth, or amount of data sent from the host, to your visitor.
